Field Manual No. 4

The Great Log Off

How to take yourself off social media - all the way off.

Inside the Manual

Choose the level you will actually do

The Great Log Off begins with a warning: deleting an app does not delete the account. It presents three choices: Level One lockdown, where you stay but lock the doors; Level Two retreat, where accounts go dark and remain reversible; and Level Three full log off, where accounts are deleted permanently.

Before any deletion, the manual requires a list of accounts, a data export, replacement logins for services connected through Facebook or Google, cancelled billing, saved contacts, and a note to the people who need to find you elsewhere.

Deletion is not instant. The manual says major platforms can have a thirty-day cancellation window, and logging in can restore the account. Save data and confirm each platform's current process before acting.

The core approach

Preserve what matters before closing the door

Prepare First

List every account, download data, replace social sign-ins, remove saved payment cards, and record the people and contacts held only inside the app.

Exit in Sequence

Strip the profile, unlink connected apps, find the account deletion path, request deletion, log out everywhere, remove saved passwords, and do not log back in during the waiting period.

Protect the Middle Path

If full exit is not possible, keep a business page, remove personal details, or keep a small private group while removing the public performance and family exposure.

A complete exit checklist

What You'll Find Inside

  • Three levels: lockdown, reversible retreat, and permanent deletion.
  • Pre-deletion file: account list, data export, connected-login changes, billing, contacts, and an exit message.
  • Universal exit: download, strip, unlink, delete, log out, remove saved passwords, and observe the thirty-day window.
  • Platform checklist: Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Snapchat, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Nextdoor, Discord, Tumblr, dating apps, and Reddit-specific post removal.
  • After the account: search names and old usernames, inspect email and saved passwords, review app history, request search removals, and address data brokers.
  • If staying: private accounts, child-photo rules, location and tagging controls, children's credit freezes, and a written family consent rule.

Work the list with a pen before pressing delete

Print the manual and choose a level before touching an account. Use the checklists to record what was exported, which connected services were repaired, when deletion was requested, and when the waiting period ends.

For families and people who need social platforms for work or access, use the middle path in the manual: reduce personal exposure, keep necessary functions, and replace what is removed rather than leaving a child or community member isolated.
